Eddie Borgo Plays the Color Field

Compared with his previous collections, Eddie Borgo’s Resort ’14 range is a horse of a different color—mainly because it has so many colors. The designer, best known for his upmarket punk aesthetic and baubles of gunmetal, pavéd crystals, and gold, found inspiration in the Color Field artists of the 1960s. The result is a vibrant mash-up of wares that are at once delicate and tough, playful and elegant. “I started collecting books a little while ago on Kenneth Noland, who is one of the great Color Field artists,” explains the ever-erudite Borgo of his research. This preliminary reading led him to artists Josef Albers, Sol LeWitt, and Dan Flavin, all of whom are reflected in his gold- and silver-plated designs set with stones, colored glass, enamel, semi-precious stones, and cubic zirconia. Borgo suggests stacking his primary- and tertiary-hued chokers, rings, and bangles, and judging by what we saw in his showroom, the effect is retro sophisticate, rather than rainbow bright.

(Image: online formal dress shops)

“Color is something that we’re constantly drilled about from a sales perspective,” explained Borgo, who’s not just design-minded, but business savvy, too. “So I figured if we were going to do color, let’s make sure that it’s referenced in an interesting way, and that it makes sense with what we do.” To wit, many of Resort’s pieces are not only meant to be combined with other designs from Resort, but also with classic hits from Borgo’s past outings.

This season also marks Borgo’s first estate-inspired jewelry, which came about after resetting a pair of vintage gemstones for a friend’s wedding. “We put our own spin on [those earrings], and I loved them so much when we finished that I started to play around with that style.” They may reference the past, but Borgo’s chunky, two-toned glass and cubic zirconia bracelets, earrings, and necklaces are decidedly modern, and could easily twinkle on any red carpet.

It would seem Borgo enjoyed his experiments with pigment, and we can expect another spin on the color wheel soon. “This collection is a precursor to what we’re doing for spring, so color is something we’ll be continuing at least into next season.” No doubt, his fans will be tickled pink.

Fashion Icon Andre Leon Talley Talks Kimye Wedding Details

Fashion Icon Andre Leon Talley Talks Kimye Wedding Details!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West finally walked down the aisle on Saturday in Florence, Italy, and ET has several teams on the ground to bring you all the latest details and updates.

One of the most high-profile guests to arrive was fashion icon and Zappos Couture and Artistic Director Andre Leon Talley, whom ET caught up with at the Westin Excelsior Florence, where he provided some exclusive tidbits about what's been happening in the lead-up to the wedding.

"It's been a whirlwind of glamor and a whirlwind of sustained mystery," he said of the festivities so far, which included a lavish party Friday night at the Chateau de Versailles outside Paris that ended with a spectacular fireworks display.

(Image: white formal dress )

Andre also revealed to us some of the strict restrictions guests are under. "We are not allowed to talk, we are not allowed to give details. No one can have cell phones, although some people did sneak cell phones in -- and people Instagramming. It's just been extraordinary."

He added: "Versailles was extraordinary... Kanye and Kim's vision was to give the people a vision of Versailles that was very intimate. It was quite beautiful and stunning, and beautiful weather. I was home by midnight."

Kim and Kanye's wedding took place Saturday afternoon in Florence, with more than more than 200 guests joining family members for the ceremony at the city's famed 16th-century Belvedere Fort, which the couple reportedly forked over $400,000 to rent out for the occasion.

Sharon Stone proves her Basic fashion Instincts

Sharon Stone proves her Basic fashion Instincts are wrong for once at Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Search

While there was a slew of gorgeous stars, and models, on the Cannes catwalk for the premiere of The Search movie, it unexpectedly fell to Sharon Stone to prove that her Basic fashion Instincts were well off the mark for once.

Wearing a black mini-dress which was low-cut with string ties, 56-year-old Sharon truly missed the fashion mark with her odd LBD.

With her hair pushed off her face and large shades on, she looked more like Brigitte Nielsen than a Hollywood movie star.

That was in stark contrast to the previous evening when Sharon was at her usual highly glamorous standard in a figure-hugging red dress that showed off her toned body and was worn with a huge amount of de Grisogono ruby and emerald jewels.

So expensive were the rocks that she wore on her body that Sharon needed eight bodyguards to ensure her safety - and that of the jewellery.

(Image: one shoulder formal dresses)

It's little surprise then that by the night's end model Cara Delevingne was spotted licking Sharon's face.

At The Search launch, while Sharon was definitely off her game in the fashion stakes, all eyes were on Cara as she headed up the models attending premiere during the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

Making sure she stood out amongst her fellow fashionistas Cara wore a short frock, while Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lara Stone, Irina Shayk and Barbara Palvin all opted for long gowns.

Cara, who was seen enjoying lunch with model friend Aymeline Valade, earlier in the day made a quick change for the red carpet.

The 21-year-old looked sensational in a strapless gold dress which caught the light as she strutted down the red carpet.

Fellow British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley went for a longer option wearing a blue-grey strapless gown, which was covered in sequins.

Looking incredibly glamorous she wore her hair styled in waves to one side of her neck, with chandelier earrings on show.

Lara Stone, who is married to David Walliams, also turned heads looking inspired by a Barbie doll wearing a hot pink dress with an symmetrical strap. Her blonde hair was full of flowing hair extensions that added to her radiant red carpet look.

She was joined by Barbara Palvin who wore a white gown with a slight fishtail detail that looked amazing in contrast to Lara's dress.

Not everyone got it right though. Like Sharon, there was Irina Shayk who opted for a bizarre choice - a yellow hooded dress with a dramatic thigh high split.

The Search film itself stars Berenice Bejo and sees her reunite with the director of The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius, in the follow up to his Oscar-winning silent movie.

A remake of Fred Zinneman’s 1948 film it is set in the Second Chechen war and recounts, on a human scale, a powerful story of conflict told through four lives that will be brought together by a shocking twist of fate.

After his parents are killed in their village, a small boy flees, joining the flood of refugees where he meets Carole, a European Union delegation head and little by little, with her help, he will return to life.

At the same time, his elder sister Raïssa searches tirelessly for him amongst the civilian exodus.

Then there’s 20-year-old Kolia, a recent Russian Army recruit who gradually becomes overwhelmed by the daily life of wartime.

The Search is due for release at the end of 2014.

Death By Fashion

I shall begin today’s blog post by putting out a disclaimer: I am not an expert at fashion; actually, I know very little about fashion. I am so bad at fashion, I can barely tell the difference between certain colours and fabrics. I once made an order for cotton underwear, received it in polyester but did not realize the difference until I was stuck in an elevator with a non-functional AC system - then things started to heat up really bad. As it turned out, Polyester is not a very good material for underwear especially if you might be in warm temperatures. The truth is I am as good at fashion as Sarah Palin is at Geography.

With this out of the way, we can, now safely begin our blog, knowing well that the blogger is no authority on fashion and therefore is immune to and exempted from insults and criticism arising from anger generated after folks have read the blog post.

After reading a few insightful articles and posts from fashion gurus like Keturah Kamugasa, it would appear that there are several stylish and fashionable people in the world. However, after looking at the fashion trends on TV, the internet and everywhere else, one will quickly change their mind and come to the conclusion that Fashion in 2014 should be added as a cause for death – along with cancer, warfare, malaria, electric shocks and car accidents. I see some people don certain outfits/accessories and imagine that this is precisely why Jesus Christ is reluctant on his second coming. He wants to come when we have gotten things right; so far so bad.

(Image: kissy special occasion dresses )

Let's take a look at some reasons why the Son of God is holding off his second coming, shall we?

1. Meggings

Once upon a time, men were men and women were women. Along the way, some women and men wanted to switch sides. Women started wearing pants so they could be able to swing and stretch their legs around without blinding innocent little children or turning on men every now and again. Somewhere on the fashion journey certain men felt like they were enjoying way too much comfort with their pants so they felt like they needed to tighten things up a little – pun definitely intended. A solution had to be found and as a result, meggings were created. Shortly after that, Justin Bieber, One Direction and Lil’ Wayne bought in on the madness and before we knew it, every teenage boy wanted to look like an eel wrapped in a tight bag. Whenever I see someone wearing meggings, I think to myself: 'Here we go again – another confused teenager hoping to impress girls who are busy looking into the mirror to even notice.' Sadly, there are grown up men who actually wear these things. And don’t get me wrong; there is so much freedom of dress that ought to be exercised. I just think that if you are going to exercise your freedom by wearing meggings, stay far away from me, stay far away from little children, stay far away from innocent girls, stay far away from other men ….in fact stay far away from everyone – stay home!

2. Shoulder Pads

In the late 70s and well into the 80s there was a wave of fashion statements that were made across the world and one of the loudest statements was made in the form of shoulder pads. Shoulder pads were not only a very trendy and fashionable addition to the human clothing detail, they were simply too comfortable. Whether you were wearing a dress, coat, jacket, t shirt, shirt or blazer, you were not cool if you had no shoulder pads. Many years later, it can be generally accepted that we have moved on and the pads have been relegated to the museum of fashion history. Unless you have the habit of sweating profusely around the shoulders, I really don’t see why you would even consider wearing these things. Lady Gaga might have pulled it off once or twice with her eccentric fashion sense but let’s face it, Lady Gaga is not a human being like you and I. She is a mutant, a long forgotten distant descendant of the Mayans and she does not belong on earth. It is not 1980 and you are not Lady Gaga so please let the shoulder pads go or you might end up looking like an unpaid prostitute hanging off a motel window. Forget the shoulder pads and stop listening to Lady Gaga’s music!

3. Flatforms

Women (and some strange men) are very keen on pushing fashion boundaries so much that they are willing to go to bizarre lengths just to make statements. Gone are the days when people chose shoes because they gave them comfort and helped them walk easily. Today, the more painful and difficult it is for you to get around, the more fashionable the shoe you are wearing. I have never quite figured out why anyone would want to wear flatforms. They are extremely uncomfortable (not that I have tried them on but I see the way girls flinch in pain and discomfort). These flatforms also look really ugly. For people who have no idea what flatforms are, thank heavens – you are the reason there is hope for this world after all. Ladies, if you are going to wear something, either feel extremely comfortable in it or at least be dashing. If you are uncomfortable and at the same time you are a pain to look at, you my friend need to consider a change in trends.

4. Grills

In the early 80s, a New Yorker called Eddie Plein decided he was tired of seeing people wear jewelry around their necks, ankles and arms. In an attempt to push the boundaries, this guy created Eddie’s Gold Teeth. The concept here was to have people wear jewellery over their teeth. Yes that’s right – over their teeth! Wearing Grillz ranks up there as a disappointing human activity almost at par with terrorism, rape, genocide, corruption, drug trafficking and child abuse. Unless you are Paul Wall, Chamillionaire or a deranged rapper from the Dirty South, please don’t try this – ever! Not even if you just won the lottery and have no idea how to spend your money. At least take a flight to the Atlantic and throw yourself out of the plane. That is better than subjecting humanity to this bogus fashion trend.

As I mentioned earlier, I am no expert at fashion but if you are an advocate for any of the above trends, our friendship ends right here right now. Sorry to have dragged you over 1000 words of pain and torture but I request that you go home, look in the mirror and tell the person in the mirror ‘You are a real loser’, then walk away. Don’t wait for their response. Just go to the nearest place of worship and repent of your sins – maybe then, Jesus might think about coming back.

W Continues Fashion's Tradition of Using 'Exotic' People As Props

W magazine recently sent fashion photographer Tim Walker and supermodel Edie Campbell to Burma, where they shot an editorial that juxtaposed Campbell (so white! so chic!) against the a background of the nation's "exotic" landmarks and citizens. It's gross and poorly conceived-of in every way that one would expect.

The text accompanying the spread, which is sort of aptly entitled "Gilt Trip," is remarkably orientalist and shockingly ill-informed. Here's a lil' sample:

What they found was a land so visually and philosophically far-out—at least from their Western perspective—that it conjured the trippy heroine of this story: Prudence Farrow, Mia's "rather uptight and impossibly perfect Buddhist sister" as Walker describes her, who got lost in deep meditation while in India, thus inspiring the Beatles song "Dear Prudence." Along her mystical tour of the country, Prudence, as played by Campbell, encounters Madame Thair, the wealthy owner of an antiques store in Yangon; members of the Kayan tribe, who are known for their neck-elongating jewelry; and a holy temple shaped like Humpty Dumpty.

(Image: long white formal dresses)

This reveals a deep insensitivity to and ignorance about the culture of Burma. In their fantasy narrative, Burma and India — two very, very different nations — are interchangeable because both are "trippy," "mystical" and "far-out" to the Western imagination. I don't even have to explain what's wrong with the phrase "a holy temple shaped like Humpty Dumpty."

The text is but four paragraphs, but W manages to squeeze a surprising amount of cultural imperialism in there. To wit: "Amid all the beauty and wonder, the crew also discovered a country that is very much set in its ways..." Let us count these ways: first, "Campbell was required to crouch, lest she be too close to an elevated Buddha. 'It may seem outdated to us, but it's where the country is,' Walker says." Uhhhh. Okay. Well, Burma is a country that predominantly practices Theravada Buddhism; it's just proper etiquette in that religion for all laypeople to keep their heads lower than Buddha statues, as well as the heads of monks and nuns. Crouching by a Buddha statue isn't abiding by some "outdated" practice — it's respecting another culture and religion. (Walker's statement is akin to someone saying, "They made our model put on a shirt in The Duomo! It may seem outdated, but, hey, that's where they are in Italy.")

Secondly, we have this fucking sentence:

[T]he concept of a fashion shoot is so foreign to the locals that enlisting their help was often an exercise in making lemonade. Walker asked for six nuns in traditional pink robes; one monk in orange turned up.

Oh ho! Silly "locals"! So difficult! So bad at following the specific demands you made on them so that they might appear your fashion spread as a complement Burma's trippy and spiritual splendor! If that's not an exercise in making lemonade, I don't know what is.

The shoot itself is just as bad, taking all the worst tropes of the offensive fashion spreads we've seen time and time again and combining them.

In some, Campbell dresses up as a Buddhist monk, in a fashion approximation of the orange monk robes. We have talked endlessly about how it's not okay to wear another person's culture as a costume because — as Ayeshda Siddiqi put it — cultural appropriation occurs "across a matrix of power: the power of visibility, the power to define what is 'ethnic' in the market." When you try on someone a culture that's not understood or accepted in the mainstream, you devalue and demean it, mark it as Other.

In others, she poses with the "exotic" people of Burma. Even though the women in these images are not relegated entirely to the background, their function is to juxtapose our "civilized" world of fashion and photo shoots against the more "primitive," fantastical land of Burma. And Campbell's Western-ness/whiteness is still centralized — in the photo shown below, the Kayan tribeswomen are literally clapping for her.

And sometimes the shoot simultaneously appropriates and exoticizes! Here's Campbell dressed as a monk (in Pucci!!!), sitting beside a monk and pretending to beg for alms.

Walker tells W that he felt very "welcome" in Burma. "Nothing was too sacred for us Westerners," he says. Uh, yeah, apparently not.

how to dress when it’s sunny in SF

San Franciscans have a multi-faceted arsenal of rain gear and are well-versed in the concept of bundling up when the fog rolls in. But they are a bit thrown off when the sun comes out.

Unlike most cities where it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, San Francisco is known to exhibit characteristics of all four seasons in the span of a day. On a sunny day in SF, Dolores Park becomes replete with an equal amount of cold beer and summer style. However, dusk is usually a harsh reminder that summer doesn’t really exist in San Francisco.

Nonetheless, the recent heat wave is a gleaming harbinger that summer is fast approaching.

It’s no secret that San Francisco weather is wildly moody, but that doesn’t mean style has to be sacrificed. There are a slew of ways to embrace the sun but still be well equipped for San Francisco’s temperamental temperatures.

(Image: special occasion dress)

“I definitely have to pull out a pair of shorts when the heat wave strikes and set the leather jacket aside,” said Roanne Quiozon, a comparative and world literature major at SF State who interns for a college fashion website and has her own fashion and lifestyle blog. “I just make a series of simple swaps, such as switching from pants to shorts, skirts and tights to skirts without the tights, or boots to loafers.”

Denizens of the “Foggy City” are no strangers to layers. SF natives know better than to leave the house without a jacket, no matter what the weather is like. Sunny days are great excuses to wear skirts, dresses and shorts, but it’s always safe to bring a coat, jacket or scarf just in case.

“San Francisco throughout the year has a lot of different climates depending on where you are in the city, but also what time of day it is, so that’s something that’s literally ingrained in the culture,” said street style photographer JT Tran, who founded Thesfstyle.com and co-authored Street Fashion Photography: Taking Stylish Pictures on the Concrete Runway. “You never know, it’s very often that it could be a nice day, but as soon as the sun starts to go down, it’s freezing… so people are very used to having a jacket or just having lots of layers so they can adjust as necessary.”

This season, San Francisco residents are retiring dark colors and embracing whites and pastels. “I’ve been seeing a lot of white for this season,” said Tran. “I think this summer there’s going to be a lot of people wearing more white than usual.”

Lighter alternatives to dark, heavy fabrics and accessories that add a unique pop of color are also great ways to embrace the sunshine.

“If I had to pick one fabric or the best color to represent a San Francisco summer I would think a whitewashed denim,” said Maghan McDowell, style reporter for the Sunday style section of the San Francisco Chronicle. “Because this is such a denim city, I mean Levi’s were invented here. And I think that is the ultimate versatile fabric: light denim.”

Pairing white denim with a light jean or chambray shirt and topping it off with colorful accessories creates a polished, playful look that is perfect for sunny days in the city.

“Accessories are an easy way to update your look, or to channel a trend you’re not quite sure how to wear yet,” said Quiozon. “Mint green cat eye sunglasses, baby blue kitten heels, pastel pink on anything…those sort of things remind me of a 50′s ice cream parlor and I absolutely adore it.”

Shorts are a must-have for a San Francisco heatwave. Tran recommends high waisted styles for women and mid-thigh length chinos or khakis for men. Pair it with an element of warmth, such as tights for the ladies and a sweater for the guys, for a polished and weather-appropriate look.

McDowell encourages San Franciscans to embrace their feminine side with skirts and dresses in lightweight fabrics such as linen. She also recommends ditching the ankle booties and acquiring a versatile pair of sneakers or flats.

Quiozon loves the playful fashion choices she sees around campus and in the city when the sun is out.

“During a heatwave people will lean towards lighter pieces, but without necessarily sacrificing big style,” said Quiozon. “Maybe they can’t wear their favorite flashy coat or vintage dress, but they can make up for it with accessories.” She describes recently spotting a man wearing a white shirt and ankle cut jeans with lime green loafers, which she thought was a great way to make an otherwise simple outfit unique.

Sunny days are a great excuse to experiment with your fashion choices. So why not take a cue from the sun and brighten up your outfit?

Fashion and beauty video bloggers cash

Fashion and beauty video bloggers cash in spruiking products to thousands of followers

The girls film themselves in their bedrooms talking viewers through their "haul", a collection of recently purchased items or product reviews and offering tutorials in beauty treatments.

What once was just a hobby for these bedroom video bloggers, or vloggers, is now a multi-million-dollar industry as brands discover new ways to tap into the lucrative teenage market.

The most popular bloggers are getting paid to spruik brands in the social media equivalent of "cash for comment".

American Bethany Mota, 18, is the poster girl of this new wave of YouTube stars.

She has captured nearly six million subscribers with a series of beauty and fashion videos that earn her an estimated $40,000 a month from advertisements that play alongside her videos.

And now others around the world, including Australia, are following in her footsteps.

Twenty-year-old Newcastle resident, Brittney Lee Saunders, is one of Australia's most popular beauty bloggers with just under 80,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel.

"My audience, I think, are about 94 per cent are females and most of them are in between the ages of, I'd say, 11 to 16," she said.

She admits that at least some of her videos are paid for by brands.

"A brand or company will generally contact a YouTuber and they just say, 'Hey, we like your channel, we like what you're doing, would you like to review our new lipstick' or whatever it is that they have, and then they'll say, 'How much do you charge?'" she said.

(Image: special occasion dress )

"In the past I've done a couple of, they call them campaigns because they kind of spread them out amongst a lot of YouTubers.

"So I did a campaign for Colgate and they paid me $1,000 for two videos and I did one for Herbal Essences and they paid me $1,000 as well. So there is a lot of money in it if you can get the right product placement."

Sydneysider Dominique Amor started her YouTube channel in high school and has since turned her hobby into a career.

"My popular videos are probably my hauls. I think people like watching them because they can see what they can buy," the 19-year-old said.

"When I graduated I had two jobs and I quit them to start working on my YouTube channel full-time."

Vloggers' reviews blur line between advertising and editorial

Consumer psychologist Adam Ferrier believes it is almost impossible to distinguish between paid endorsement and opinion.

"The line between advertising and editorial is completely merged and anybody who thinks that these two things are sacrosanct and completely separate, and separate in the minds of the consumer is deluding themselves," he said.

Ms Saunders revealed that different companies have different requests for branding of videos.

"They have all rules that they want you to follow so you can either say this video is brought to you today by Colgate, they've sent me this toothpaste and I'm trying it out, or whatever. Sometimes you don't," she said.

"Sometimes it's as little as link their website in the description box of your video."

The Australian advertising industry is largely self-regulated across all media.

Best practice guidelines for advertising on social media suggest bloggers disclose if content has been sponsored, either through cash or in-kind payment, but there is no law requiring them to do so.

The most popular vloggers are now being signed up to YouTube networks – umbrella companies that represent multiple YouTube content makers and help them monetise their videos by creating deals with brands.

These YouTube networks are very attractive to large corporations looking for new ways to promote their products.

Maker Studios, a network of YouTubers with 380 million loyal viewers was recently bought by children's entertainment giant Disney, in a deal worth up to $US950 million.

"The good thing about networks is they can go 'Hey, we've got these 10 amazing girls. You know we can give you this deal where we promote your product over 10 channels and this is how much it's going to cost'," Ms Saunders said.

One network's website promised that in a sponsored product review, bloggers would touch on all the pros of the product and rarely or never talk about any cons.

Ms Saunders herself admits: "I would never make a negative video if a company sent me a product. I'd rather just not say anything at all."

The videos attract an overwhelmingly young audience who are unaware of the commercial influence.

Thirteen-year-old Aiya says she and her friends get most of their beauty and fashion ideas from YouTube.

"With a magazine it's just like a page of words and you can't see it actually happening so when you watch it, it's more believable I guess," she said.

"You can see them. They're like real people."

All About the Clio Image Awards

“I’m unclear as to why I’m here tonight,” said Sarah Jessica Parker, after receiving the Honorary Clio Award Wednesday night at The Pierre hotel. Indeed, the inaugural Clio Image Awards, which awards the best creatives in the fashion and beauty industries, was for those specifically in the advertising field. But Parker was chosen, it was explained, for her contributions in the realm of fashion. As her BFF and host for the night, Andy Cohen, extrapolated: “She’s drawn comparisons to Audrey Hepburn but better dressed. Has anyone had more influence with fashion than SJP?”

The two had a whirlwind past few days together, having had attended the Met ball as dates.

Parker — who wore Oscar de la Renta, as she did at the Met gala, and her own line of SJP shoes — thanked those who had inspired her in the past, like HBO and Patricia Field, among others, who helped launch her into a fashion star.

“The great Pat Field really taught me how and when to break the rules, and that ugly could be beautiful,” she said.

(Image: formal dresses online )

Another big award for the night went to the photography duo of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who were awarded the Achievement in Fashion Photography award by The Hollywood Reporter property Pret-a-Reporter. The two, who have photographed everyone from Lady Gaga and Rihanna, to campaigns for Miu Miu and Chloé, said their ability to open up their subjects and their success was attributed to “being real, and being honest.”

The biggest winner of the night for advertising was the Minneapolis-based firm Peterson Milla Hooks, which took home the Grand Clio Image awards for both Mass/Billboard Campaign and Mass/Integrated Campaign for its holiday 2013 “Make Love” Gap campaign. It was the same ad that started a strong online movement in support of actor and designer Waris Ahluwalia, who was a victim of racist paraphernalia.

Ralph Lauren took home awards for Design Prestige/Architectural Design for its RRL store fronts, and the Integrated Campaign award for prestige/accessories, for its initiative with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The campaign was for Ralph Lauren’s fall 2013 accessories collection, with shelter dogs appearing alongside models.

Hot Fashion Models Are Recruited for 'Sexy' Ad

Hot Fashion Models Are Recruited for 'Sexy' Ad, but Then Things Get Really Awkward

Attractive models are great at being sexy in commercials—until the dialogue on the cue cards starts getting super weird and unsexy.

Have a look at this video without spoilers, then scroll down for more on the campaign.

Creative studio and production company Big Block Live created the video as a Mothers' Day campaign for Save the Children, which is on a roll lately with some great viral PSAs. Josh Ruben and Vincent Peone (Josh + Vince) directed the spot, having connected with Save the Children more than a year ago.

"We connected last year when Michael Amaditz from Save the Children saw our talk at SXSW about making funny content," Peone tells AdFreak. "They challenged us to come up with an idea that dealt with the subject matter in an evocative way."

"We essentially said, 'Let's take this a step further and add some organic reactions from our talent,' " Ruben adds. "Viewers respond to visceral material like that, and the turn really hooks you in such a fun, darkly awkward way. Save the Children already knew they wanted to use sexy content to drive attention to the cause, which is wise because, to put it bluntly, even the keyword 'sex' is an instant leg up for views."

So, how awkward did it get on the set?

"It certainly wasn't the most comfortable day on set," says Peone. "We had cast a 'director' character, Aubyn Gwinn, who did a great job at being supportive to our talent, encouraging them to give it their best shot. In the end, we were really happy with the level of commitment the models gave us, despite the ridiculous circumstances. Once the ruse was up and our models learned that they were in a Save the Children commercial, everyone was relieved and happy to have lent their performances to the cause. We were thrilled—we knew this piece could only work with genuine reactions, but we were highly sensitive about not ruining anyone's day in the process."

Gwinn, in fact, has done fashion ads, which was critical. "We made it a priority to run the set like a fashion shoot. It was crucial that it looked and felt legit," says Ruben. "We knew if we said we were directing it, there would be a slight chance we'd get recognized from CollegeHumor."
