NHS cancer patients seen as 'just a set of symptoms'

NHS cancer patients seen as 'just a set of symptoms': Report says chances of being cured hinge on where the patient lives and their age

Cancer patients treated on the NHS are dying too soon because they are being refused surgery, radiotherapy and breakthrough drugs, according to a report.

And a worrying lack of compassion from staff leaves one in five feeling like a ‘set of symptoms’ rather than a human being.

A report by Macmillan Cancer Support also found chances of being cured hinge on where they live and their age, which determines whether they are offered the best possible treatment.

It concludes that patients in some areas are routinely being failed by the NHS due to late diagnosis, poor treatment and a lack of compassion – with one in three still dying within a year of diagnosis.

The report highlighted figures from the Office for National Statistics last year which showed that 68 per cent of patients survived for a year.

Although this has risen from 59 per cent in 1996, it is still far lower than many other Western countries.

Ciarán Devane, chief executive of Macmillan, said: ‘It is a national shame our cancer survival rates are among the worst in Europe, that patients are being treated with a lack of dignity, or being denied a “good” death.’

The charity says the NHS cannot meet the needs of the growing number of cancer patients, which is expected to rise from two million to four million by 2030 – an increase partly due to the ageing population as well as to advances in treatment.

Only this week new figures showed that half of patients now live for at least ten years after diagnosis, double the number in the 1970s.

But survival rates for lung cancer and other types such as oesophageal and pancreatic remain shockingly low, and fewer than 5 per cent of patients live beyond a decade.

This report – which looked at nearly 70 previous studies – calculates that as many as 3,500 deaths could be delayed if the rates of surgery increased to match those in other European countries and some of the better performing areas of the UK

Image:formal dresses online

The charity estimates that as many as 15,000 patients are having radiotherapy delayed becausecentres are understaffed or using outdated machines.

In addition, patients are far less likely to receive the latest drugs compared to elsewhere in Europe because they are routinely rejected by NICE, the NHS rationing body.

Macmillan also found older cancer sufferers are often denied surgery or other treatments because doctors do not think it worthwhile.

One 66-year-old woman with breast cancer said her consultant had put her off having chemotherapy because she didn’t have much life in front of her.

The patient, known only as Sarah, told the charity how ‘he threw every negative at me about the treatment’.

‘I asked him later why he’d been so negative, and he said, “You’re 60, not 30. At 30 you’d have more life in front of you”. I just wish I’d been treated based on my general health, not my age.’

A Department of Health spokesman said: ‘We have invested £750million over four years to support early diagnosis and improve access to screening and have already seen significant improvements in some cancer survival rates.’

Meanwhile, the Health Secretary has launched an investigation into whether doctors helped terminally ill children to die.

Jeremy Hunt confirmed officials are looking into claims that two teenage cancer patients were deliberately given very high doses of painkillers.

The cases date back to the 1990s but only came to light in February when retired GP Michael Irwin made the allegations against two of his friends, who were doctors.

He later said there were potentially many more cases.

Spanish Fashion Designers Host Exhibit in Paris

Spanish Fashion Designers Host Exhibit in Paris

Going against economic austerity, a group of 28 Spanish fashion designers, including Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Custo Barcelona, Devota & Lomba, Etxeberría and Andrés Sarda, took over their country’s embassy in Paris on Thursday night with a one-night-only exhibition of their designs. “People ask me, what is your business plan; I say it’s not to crumble,” said Ruiz de la Prada, whose 33-year-old brand is sold in 120 countries. “But I’m a democratic designer,” she noted about her success. “I serve all age groups and the poorest people; I’m inexpensive.”

Her daughter Cosima Ramirez, in charge of Ruiz de la Prada’s international expansion, explained, “Only high end and fast fashion are doing well in Spain, the ones in between are struggling terribly.” The young entrepreneur said she was planning to take her mother’s brand to Asia via Malaysia and Indonesia, before moving into China and Japan, within the next five years.

Roberto Etxeberría divulged he would show his next spring collection on the official New York fashion calendar in September, at Lincoln Center, engaging “friends and fans instead of [professional] models.”

“Yes, we could use more audacity,” observed Mireille Suzanne Francette Porte, better known as Orlan, who also attended the cocktail party. The French artist, whose trademark facial implants were stylishly covered with glitter, said she was going to Shanghai in July with a collection of works “exploring new technologies,” while her Paris exhibition slated to kick off in September was to showcase her interpretation of reality via masks she collected from the Beijing opera.

In May, the “Made in Spain” show is traveling to Portugal.

Online fashion space

Online fashion space: Competition set to intensify as Amazon enters apparels

India’s online fashion space, which has an array of players vying for the lion's share of the market, just got more competitive. e-commerce giant Amazon on Thursday announced its entry into apparels with the launch of ethnic and Indo-western wear for women.

Buyers will have over 12,000 contemporary and traditional styles from more than 90 apparel brands by private labels, besides national and regional retailers, to choose from. Amazon also announced the launch of a dedicated sunglasses store with more than 2,800 styles. The e-commerce giant already offers an assortment of accessories for women, such as jewellery, watches, beauty products, handbags and shoes.

"We now offer our women customers the season’s hottest fashion picks on their fingertips...” said Vikas Purohit, category leader - fashion, Amazon India.

The store will offer a selection from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Surat, Mathura and Coimbatore, besides Mumbai and Delhi.

“We have partnered with Hands of India, a Vrindaban-based organisation that works with over 30 artisan groups in various rural areas of India to offer hand-woven lines in pure cotton and silk weaves... embellished with traditional and folk embroidery,” Purohit said.

According to Pragya Singh, associate VP, retail, Technopak, Indian companies are likely to have prepared themselves to take on Amazon as the development was inevitable. “It a was matter of time before Amazon entered the apparels segment. Everybody, including other players in the market, knew that this will happen,” she said.

Miranda Kerr Makes Her Creepy Singing Debut

Miranda Kerr Makes Her Creepy Singing Debut, Neil Patrick Harris’ Hedwig Costumes, and Feminism’s Viral Wave

Since learning back in February that Miranda Kerr was to troll us with an Elvis duet featuring Broadway star Bobby Fox, we’ve managed to not eagerly anticipate its release. But here it is, a teaser of the first single from the model-turned-sexercise ambassador, infiltrating your ear holes like a creepy asthmatic baby. “I have recorded a couple of songs, actually, that no one knows about,” she told British Vogue last year. “You’re the Boss” features on Bobby Fox’s debut album, The Fantastic Mr Fox, due to be released this Friday.

A music-y thing we are infinitely more excited for is the Neil Patrick Harris-starring Broadway version of transgressive rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Madonna‘s stylist, Arianne Phillips, is designing the costumes for the production (she’s also worked with No Doubt and Courtney Love) and sat down with Style.com to talk about putting NPH in stilettos.

Remember that #FreeTheNipple hashtag that made it onto Lena Dunham‘s, Miley Cyrus‘, and Cara Delevingne‘s… um, t-shirts? The brains behind them was “top freedom” proponent Lina Esco, who’s upcoming film follows two women who campaign to get naked breasts in New York decriminalized. (Actually, they have been since 1992, but women are still being arrested.) The former actress was dropped from her agency when she revealed her plans to make the film, so the least you can do is show your support. And maybe your nipples?

Vogue is “Bound 2″ a lawsuit. As if there wasn’t already enough of a reason to regret putting Kimye on the cover, Anna Wintour‘s company is now being sued over the cover shoot video. The plaintiff is Rickey Spicer, the same forgotten boy-band crooner who sued West last year, and now wants “unspecified compensation.”

In other Vogue news, the magazine is apparently shifting its focus from print to online. Over the last six months they’ve apparently been shifting staff over to vogue.com, as well as making a few new hires. Word on the street is Wintour wants around 20 new people to work on the website, which will be unveiled at NYFW this September, so dust off your resume if you’ve got a thing for cumbersome hashtags.

Japan’s youth is suffering from a “celibacy syndrome.” A third of under-30s have never been on a date, and a quarter of men and half of women claim asexuality. Those signs reading “NO DANCING” and “Do not approach girls” at Tokyo nightclubs and Harajuku fashion parties? They’re not just being ironic.

Google Glass‘ clean eating cousin, the Nike Fuelband, was laid to rest yesterday. Or, at least, the staff working on it were. “Nike is committed to Nike+, to NikeFuel, and to driving innovations that bring richer experiences for all athletes,” a spokesperson for the company said in an email. But really it looks like you’re going to have to think of another way to brag about your 12-miler on Facebook.

MR Sky Ferreira‘s Saint Laurent lewks weren’t your jam? You can also use shoppable technology to get your mitts on the wardrobes of Nicki Minaj and Kate Upton in The Other Woman. New app StylePic, which is yet another Shazam for fashion, is launching with the back of 20th Century Fox, who have uploaded pictures of the cast’s outfits to its database.

Planning on launching your own style blog? We’ve got news for you, kid — don’t. Fashion blogging is so totally over now, unless you happen to be Leandra Medine, of course.

Something that definitely isn’t over is GIFs, despite the wealth of faster, more efficient formats available. Maybe because they’re awesome?

SCAD student shoots for winning watch company design

Nicole Calafiore, a Savannah College of Art and Design senior, is obsessed with clothing buttons.

At age 4, she learned to sew from her grandmother, which began a life-long fascination with buttons. Calafiore, 23, estimates she has collected and purchased more than 1,000 that are kept in two large containers.

In addition to her anomalous hobby, her early sewing lessons kindled a passion for fashion and design. Calafiore is enrolled in SCAD’s fashion marketing and management program, which allows her to make booklets, magazines, store layouts and other products geared toward retail companies.

(Image: formal dresses )

The design experience has paid off.

Calafiore is one of 30 finalists, out of a field of 800 entries, competing to win a design contest sponsored by Fossil, the Dallas area-based watchmaker known for its colorful tin boxes in which its wristwatches are sold.

In recognition of its 30th anniversary, Fossil asked contestants to create their own graphic designs based on American travel of the 1950s and 1960s — think vintage automobiles, greasy diners and offbeat roadside attractions.

Named a top-30 finalist, Calafiore’s design will be produced into an actual tin box to be displayed at Fossil stores and events, and it has already been posted online. Voting on the designs is allowed once per day until Tuesday at fossiltincontest.com. The winning design will be announced on April 26.

The grand prize winner will receive $5,000.

Calafiore describes her entry, which incorporates vintage maps, an old picture, antique automobile and road sign, as “old school classic.”

“I wanted things to be a little scattered and collage,” she said. “I went with the more vintage road trip vibe because I do love Fossil’s leather weekender bags.” In her off time, Calafiore often finds herself writing about fashion news, trends and things she finds inspirational for her blog, The Fashion Scoop at thefashscoop.blogspot.com, where she often models her fashion choices.

Growing up in Somerset, N.J., Calafiore sometimes fashioned her family's beach towels into what became designer gowns in her imagination. After taking high school sewing classes she became convinced fashion was in her future. She attended New York's Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising before transferring to SCAD's program, which she says is more in line with her future ambitions.

Though she attends a school where students are known locally for their unique fashion tastes, Calafiore describes her own personal style, which she often bases on her mood, as “minimalist” and “classic.”

“Never anything too risque,” she adds.

On the other hand, her fashion design work is admittedly more creative and attempts to push the envelope beyond what is vogue. Anyone can make a dress, she tells herself, but creating something that's never been done before is an daily motivation.

Calafiore’s aspirations beyond the Fossil contest and graduation are leaning toward fashion trend forecasting.

A year ago, Calafiore entered a T-shirt contest sponsored by Diet Coke. She didn’t make it past the first round.

Her standing in the Fossil design contest, however, has given her a boost of confidence.

“That was disappointing,” recalled Calafiore, “but then to get this was a reassurance that I have a future within some art field.”

Showcasing the Power of Brand Vogue

London’s Southbank Centre is an unlikely place to find a fashion festival. But over the weekend, British Vogue took up residence, festooning the building’s monotonous facade with the iconic Vogue masthead for its third annual Vogue Festival.

The hall’s sizeable, sun-dappled foyer was a hive of activity. A phalanx of mirrored Burberry Beauty stations, Hersheson Blow Out Bars and Opi Nail stations was set up alongside the Vogue shop, which sold own-branded merchandise. There was also the Vogue Cinema, a champagne bar and a Harrods-branded catwalk on which attendees could live out their runway dreams.

This was brand Vogue — and brand fashion — writ large.

Street style photographers roamed the concrete environs, capturing models like Karlie Kloss, Edie Campbell and Jourdan Dunn. Legions of their ecstatic fans were thrilled to be in the same mix and dressed with the utmost Instagram-consideration. Some took matters into their own hands, gamely photographing each other in social media-ready selfies. Céline handbags, Chanel rucksacks, mirrored lenses and neon shoes — the street-style hits of the last five years — were all on display.

Thankfully, there was substance behind the gloss. We saw Francesca Burns, fashion editor, hunched over a piece of gold jewelry in an intimate ‘Style Advisor’ conversation, and Dolly Jones, editor of Vogue.com, with a bank of writers stationed behind Mac laptops, creating a clever stream of live reports on Vogue and its social media channels.

But the calibre of speakers guaranteed that the real action would be the talks themselves. Merely getting the infamously press-shy Phoebe Philo to agree to speak would have constituted a major coup on its own, but there were also talks with Valentino Garavani, Naomi Campbell, Tory Burch and Manolo Blahnik, amongst others.

Audience members were able to ask questions of their fashion role models, and share in intimate moments of personal reflection. Ms Philo revealed her rationale for refusing to sell Céline online, saying she preferred that people come into a Céline store and touch and feel the clothes for themselves. She also spoke passionately about her distaste for hypersexualised fashion imagery.

Fashion director Lucinda Chambers sat down with Lady Amanda Harlech and Alexa Chung to talk personal style, while Grayson Perry, Lilly Cooper (neé Allen) and Jasper Conran mused on the meanings of taste in a lively panel, with expectedly hilarious results.

Clare Langham-Brown, who works for H&M, told BoF that access to designers and fashion personalities like these was a significant draw for her. “Seeing them in a more informal way, hearing them share personal details and seeing their personalities is amazing,” she said.

“I think there was a lot less of this kind of thing when we were students,” recalled Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough, in the greenroom after his talk with partner Lazaro Hernandez and another power duo, Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley. “Fashion was just less popular,” added Hernandez. “It wasn’t a facet of popular culture like it is now. As a fashion student I would have been so pumped to see people like Marc [Jacobs] and Helmut Lang at something like this.”

Indeed, the power of the Vogue brand today extends beyond the surface of fashion, into education. “I came because I chose to specialise in digital marketing on my course, so I wanted to hear the talk on fashion’s digital revolution,” said Rachael Weaver, a marketing student from the University of Surrey. “It was really good, really informative,” she added.

Vogue’s focus on this demographic of engaged, aspirant fashion followers has never been so fully realised, or clear. But is the festival a money making proposition?

Condé Nast says it sold around 7,000 tickets for this year’s Vogue festival. Most talks filled Queen Elizabeth Hall to its 900-person capacity, with press, partners and speakers’ guests taking up approximately 170 tickets per talk. At £40 per talk, ticket sales generated about £280,000 (or $467,000) in revenue. There were also revenues generated from sponsors like Harrods, but after removing costs of production, it’s probably fair to say the conference is not a huge money spinner.

But that’s besides the point. For many attendees, the Vogue Festival was a first step towards becoming part of the fashion tribe. Tellingly, before the careers talk, a pamphlet had been placed on every seat in the hall, advertising The Condé Nast College of Fashion and its course offering. This was most certainly a tantalising teaser.

Sharon Stone proves her Basic fashion Instincts

Sharon Stone proves her Basic fashion Instincts are wrong for once at Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Search

While there was a slew of gorgeous stars, and models, on the Cannes catwalk for the premiere of The Search movie, it unexpectedly fell to Sharon Stone to prove that her Basic fashion Instincts were well off the mark for once.

Wearing a black mini-dress which was low-cut with string ties, 56-year-old Sharon truly missed the fashion mark with her odd LBD.

With her hair pushed off her face and large shades on, she looked more like Brigitte Nielsen than a Hollywood movie star.

That was in stark contrast to the previous evening when Sharon was at her usual highly glamorous standard in a figure-hugging red dress that showed off her toned body and was worn with a huge amount of de Grisogono ruby and emerald jewels.

So expensive were the rocks that she wore on her body that Sharon needed eight bodyguards to ensure her safety - and that of the jewellery.

(Image: one shoulder formal dresses)

It's little surprise then that by the night's end model Cara Delevingne was spotted licking Sharon's face.

At The Search launch, while Sharon was definitely off her game in the fashion stakes, all eyes were on Cara as she headed up the models attending premiere during the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

Making sure she stood out amongst her fellow fashionistas Cara wore a short frock, while Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lara Stone, Irina Shayk and Barbara Palvin all opted for long gowns.

Cara, who was seen enjoying lunch with model friend Aymeline Valade, earlier in the day made a quick change for the red carpet.

The 21-year-old looked sensational in a strapless gold dress which caught the light as she strutted down the red carpet.

Fellow British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley went for a longer option wearing a blue-grey strapless gown, which was covered in sequins.

Looking incredibly glamorous she wore her hair styled in waves to one side of her neck, with chandelier earrings on show.

Lara Stone, who is married to David Walliams, also turned heads looking inspired by a Barbie doll wearing a hot pink dress with an symmetrical strap. Her blonde hair was full of flowing hair extensions that added to her radiant red carpet look.

She was joined by Barbara Palvin who wore a white gown with a slight fishtail detail that looked amazing in contrast to Lara's dress.

Not everyone got it right though. Like Sharon, there was Irina Shayk who opted for a bizarre choice - a yellow hooded dress with a dramatic thigh high split.

The Search film itself stars Berenice Bejo and sees her reunite with the director of The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius, in the follow up to his Oscar-winning silent movie.

A remake of Fred Zinneman’s 1948 film it is set in the Second Chechen war and recounts, on a human scale, a powerful story of conflict told through four lives that will be brought together by a shocking twist of fate.

After his parents are killed in their village, a small boy flees, joining the flood of refugees where he meets Carole, a European Union delegation head and little by little, with her help, he will return to life.

At the same time, his elder sister Raïssa searches tirelessly for him amongst the civilian exodus.

Then there’s 20-year-old Kolia, a recent Russian Army recruit who gradually becomes overwhelmed by the daily life of wartime.

The Search is due for release at the end of 2014.

Death By Fashion

I shall begin today’s blog post by putting out a disclaimer: I am not an expert at fashion; actually, I know very little about fashion. I am so bad at fashion, I can barely tell the difference between certain colours and fabrics. I once made an order for cotton underwear, received it in polyester but did not realize the difference until I was stuck in an elevator with a non-functional AC system - then things started to heat up really bad. As it turned out, Polyester is not a very good material for underwear especially if you might be in warm temperatures. The truth is I am as good at fashion as Sarah Palin is at Geography.

With this out of the way, we can, now safely begin our blog, knowing well that the blogger is no authority on fashion and therefore is immune to and exempted from insults and criticism arising from anger generated after folks have read the blog post.

After reading a few insightful articles and posts from fashion gurus like Keturah Kamugasa, it would appear that there are several stylish and fashionable people in the world. However, after looking at the fashion trends on TV, the internet and everywhere else, one will quickly change their mind and come to the conclusion that Fashion in 2014 should be added as a cause for death – along with cancer, warfare, malaria, electric shocks and car accidents. I see some people don certain outfits/accessories and imagine that this is precisely why Jesus Christ is reluctant on his second coming. He wants to come when we have gotten things right; so far so bad.

(Image: kissy special occasion dresses )

Let's take a look at some reasons why the Son of God is holding off his second coming, shall we?

1. Meggings

Once upon a time, men were men and women were women. Along the way, some women and men wanted to switch sides. Women started wearing pants so they could be able to swing and stretch their legs around without blinding innocent little children or turning on men every now and again. Somewhere on the fashion journey certain men felt like they were enjoying way too much comfort with their pants so they felt like they needed to tighten things up a little – pun definitely intended. A solution had to be found and as a result, meggings were created. Shortly after that, Justin Bieber, One Direction and Lil’ Wayne bought in on the madness and before we knew it, every teenage boy wanted to look like an eel wrapped in a tight bag. Whenever I see someone wearing meggings, I think to myself: 'Here we go again – another confused teenager hoping to impress girls who are busy looking into the mirror to even notice.' Sadly, there are grown up men who actually wear these things. And don’t get me wrong; there is so much freedom of dress that ought to be exercised. I just think that if you are going to exercise your freedom by wearing meggings, stay far away from me, stay far away from little children, stay far away from innocent girls, stay far away from other men ….in fact stay far away from everyone – stay home!

2. Shoulder Pads

In the late 70s and well into the 80s there was a wave of fashion statements that were made across the world and one of the loudest statements was made in the form of shoulder pads. Shoulder pads were not only a very trendy and fashionable addition to the human clothing detail, they were simply too comfortable. Whether you were wearing a dress, coat, jacket, t shirt, shirt or blazer, you were not cool if you had no shoulder pads. Many years later, it can be generally accepted that we have moved on and the pads have been relegated to the museum of fashion history. Unless you have the habit of sweating profusely around the shoulders, I really don’t see why you would even consider wearing these things. Lady Gaga might have pulled it off once or twice with her eccentric fashion sense but let’s face it, Lady Gaga is not a human being like you and I. She is a mutant, a long forgotten distant descendant of the Mayans and she does not belong on earth. It is not 1980 and you are not Lady Gaga so please let the shoulder pads go or you might end up looking like an unpaid prostitute hanging off a motel window. Forget the shoulder pads and stop listening to Lady Gaga’s music!

3. Flatforms

Women (and some strange men) are very keen on pushing fashion boundaries so much that they are willing to go to bizarre lengths just to make statements. Gone are the days when people chose shoes because they gave them comfort and helped them walk easily. Today, the more painful and difficult it is for you to get around, the more fashionable the shoe you are wearing. I have never quite figured out why anyone would want to wear flatforms. They are extremely uncomfortable (not that I have tried them on but I see the way girls flinch in pain and discomfort). These flatforms also look really ugly. For people who have no idea what flatforms are, thank heavens – you are the reason there is hope for this world after all. Ladies, if you are going to wear something, either feel extremely comfortable in it or at least be dashing. If you are uncomfortable and at the same time you are a pain to look at, you my friend need to consider a change in trends.

4. Grills

In the early 80s, a New Yorker called Eddie Plein decided he was tired of seeing people wear jewelry around their necks, ankles and arms. In an attempt to push the boundaries, this guy created Eddie’s Gold Teeth. The concept here was to have people wear jewellery over their teeth. Yes that’s right – over their teeth! Wearing Grillz ranks up there as a disappointing human activity almost at par with terrorism, rape, genocide, corruption, drug trafficking and child abuse. Unless you are Paul Wall, Chamillionaire or a deranged rapper from the Dirty South, please don’t try this – ever! Not even if you just won the lottery and have no idea how to spend your money. At least take a flight to the Atlantic and throw yourself out of the plane. That is better than subjecting humanity to this bogus fashion trend.

As I mentioned earlier, I am no expert at fashion but if you are an advocate for any of the above trends, our friendship ends right here right now. Sorry to have dragged you over 1000 words of pain and torture but I request that you go home, look in the mirror and tell the person in the mirror ‘You are a real loser’, then walk away. Don’t wait for their response. Just go to the nearest place of worship and repent of your sins – maybe then, Jesus might think about coming back.

Hot Fashion Models Are Recruited for 'Sexy' Ad

Hot Fashion Models Are Recruited for 'Sexy' Ad, but Then Things Get Really Awkward

Attractive models are great at being sexy in commercials—until the dialogue on the cue cards starts getting super weird and unsexy.

Have a look at this video without spoilers, then scroll down for more on the campaign.

Creative studio and production company Big Block Live created the video as a Mothers' Day campaign for Save the Children, which is on a roll lately with some great viral PSAs. Josh Ruben and Vincent Peone (Josh + Vince) directed the spot, having connected with Save the Children more than a year ago.

"We connected last year when Michael Amaditz from Save the Children saw our talk at SXSW about making funny content," Peone tells AdFreak. "They challenged us to come up with an idea that dealt with the subject matter in an evocative way."

(Image:formal long dresses )

"We essentially said, 'Let's take this a step further and add some organic reactions from our talent,' " Ruben adds. "Viewers respond to visceral material like that, and the turn really hooks you in such a fun, darkly awkward way. Save the Children already knew they wanted to use sexy content to drive attention to the cause, which is wise because, to put it bluntly, even the keyword 'sex' is an instant leg up for views."

So, how awkward did it get on the set?

"It certainly wasn't the most comfortable day on set," says Peone. "We had cast a 'director' character, Aubyn Gwinn, who did a great job at being supportive to our talent, encouraging them to give it their best shot. In the end, we were really happy with the level of commitment the models gave us, despite the ridiculous circumstances. Once the ruse was up and our models learned that they were in a Save the Children commercial, everyone was relieved and happy to have lent their performances to the cause. We were thrilled—we knew this piece could only work with genuine reactions, but we were highly sensitive about not ruining anyone's day in the process."

Gwinn, in fact, has done fashion ads, which was critical. "We made it a priority to run the set like a fashion shoot. It was crucial that it looked and felt legit," says Ruben. "We knew if we said we were directing it, there would be a slight chance we'd get recognized from CollegeHumor."

Discover Current Lifestyle Trends

Sharing the same space can inspire an idea. Roommates at IIT-Kanpur, Ankit Sachan, 27, Ashish Kumar, 27 and Koustubh Sinhal, 26, co-founded Fashupp in December 2013. Ashish did his BTech in Electrical Engineering, Ankit in Biological Sciences and Engineering while Koustubh completed a dual course of BTech and MTech in Mechanical Engineering in 2010 while the other two graduated in 2009 from IIT-Kanpur.

Fashupp is a fashion, lifestyle discovery and styling platform. With this venture, the triumvirate aim to disrupt the way in which people discover and consume fashion trends. Ankit says, “Style is all about a mix and match of clothes and accessories in a trendy and fashionable way. We call it a mashup since the user creates a collage of accessories which are decorated with a theme and background.”

The highly fashion-conscious users of the website create and curate the content where one can see the latest trends in the fashion world. The mashups are not just images; they can be purchased at a variety of stores across the country. Interesting contests are also held on the latest fashion trends. Ashish says, “Our aim is to enable people to find the coolest lifestyle products sold across the country.”

Like most ideas that come out of a seemingly simple problem, the founding of Fashupp was a simple affair too. The trip realised that there was no styling platform in the country and they decided to build one from scratch in June 2013. The three of them took care of the development of the website. They were later joined by a fashion Chief-Editor from NIFT and interns who are from NIFT too.

Koustubh reckons that giving up their cushy jobs for entrepreneurship was a decision that was hard to take and it gained fruition with getting a funding of `10 lakh from TLabs, an initiative by Times Internet, a start-up accelerator for internet and mobile technology start-ups in India. It all happened when they were selected in the 10,000 Startups, a competition run by The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) which gave them the much sought-after, ‘visibility’ that a startup yearns for. Fashupp earns its revenues by partnering with ecommerce stores through the affiliate marketing model.

Ashish advises, “Read a myriad of blogs and websites like Techcrunch, Mashable, GigaOm and FastCompany if you do not have a business idea, as this will help you understand how businesses work. Keep your ears and mouth open, talk to a lot of people and market yourself brazenly, this will help you when you startup.”

Koustubh advises that talking to startup founders, accelerators or anyone with an understanding of the startup world would do a world of good to you in understanding the nuances of business and how to bootstrap. Ankit asks the entrepreneur in you to plan at least a year in advance and believe in your dreams.

All About the Clio Image Awards

“I’m unclear as to why I’m here tonight,” said Sarah Jessica Parker, after receiving the Honorary Clio Award Wednesday night at The Pierre hotel. Indeed, the inaugural Clio Image Awards, which awards the best creatives in the fashion and beauty industries, was for those specifically in the advertising field. But Parker was chosen, it was explained, for her contributions in the realm of fashion. As her BFF and host for the night, Andy Cohen, extrapolated: “She’s drawn comparisons to Audrey Hepburn but better dressed. Has anyone had more influence with fashion than SJP?”

The two had a whirlwind past few days together, having had attended the Met ball as dates.

Parker — who wore Oscar de la Renta, as she did at the Met gala, and her own line of SJP shoes — thanked those who had inspired her in the past, like HBO and Patricia Field, among others, who helped launch her into a fashion star.

“The great Pat Field really taught me how and when to break the rules, and that ugly could be beautiful,” she said.

Another big award for the night went to the photography duo of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who were awarded the Achievement in Fashion Photography award by The Hollywood Reporter property Pret-a-Reporter. The two, who have photographed everyone from Lady Gaga and Rihanna, to campaigns for Miu Miu and Chloé, said their ability to open up their subjects and their success was attributed to “being real, and being honest.”

The biggest winner of the night for advertising was the Minneapolis-based firm Peterson Milla Hooks, which took home the Grand Clio Image awards for both Mass/Billboard Campaign and Mass/Integrated Campaign for its holiday 2013 “Make Love” Gap campaign. It was the same ad that started a strong online movement in support of actor and designer Waris Ahluwalia, who was a victim of racist paraphernalia.

Ralph Lauren took home awards for Design Prestige/Architectural Design for its RRL store fronts, and the Integrated Campaign award for prestige/accessories, for its initiative with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The campaign was for Ralph Lauren’s fall 2013 accessories collection, with shelter dogs appearing alongside models.

“All of the dogs were rescued,” a spokeswoman from Ralph Lauren said in accepting the award.

Other awards included Kids Creative for print advertisements for its Alexander McQueen campaign featuring Kate Moss; an illustration award for Macy’s Out of Home poster campaign for Marcel’s Ray-Ban advertorials, and engagement experiential to Coty for its Marc Jacobs social media push for Jacobs’ Daisy fragrance. Rounding out the winners were Los Angeles-based Wren for short form film for its “First Kiss” video for fall 2014; Copenhagen-based & Co., which took home mass/series for its “Made From Cool” video for Jack & Jones; Norfolk., Va.-based Grow, which won the digital campaign award for “Burberry Kisses: A Google Art, Copy and Code Project” for Burberry Beauty, and New York-based Firstborn for digital social media for the Uniqlo Pinterest Campaign for Uniqlo Dry Mesh.
